Maryvale High School Students of the Month – October 2020
Meet the Maryvale High School Students of the Month for October 2020. The students were chosen by teachers using the following PAWS criteria:

- Academic Excellence
- Working Diligently

Melanie Alcaraz Navarrete
Meelanie is a Junior Maryvale High School. Mr. Dominguez chose Melanie and had this to say, “She is a serious student. Melanie has adapted to our new online learning. When it comes to issues such as internet, deadlines for assignments and assessments, and placing education over everything else that tells you a lot about this individual. I highly recommend her for the SOM.” Way to go Melanie!!
Eric Alvillar
Eric is a Sophomore. Sgt. Yost chose Eric and this is what he said: “I am selecting Eric as JROTC’s Student of the month for his outstanding academic performance and his success mindset. Eric has shown he understands the concepts presented in class, and has the resilience to break through barriers and adapt to issues with virtual instruction. Furthermore, Eric excels in introspection and can identify his strengths and weakness and then follow up with an actionable plan to set himself up for success.” Congratulations Eric!
Usiel Bernardio Vargas
Usiel is a Freshman. He was chosen by Ms. Horvath. She said “Usiel is my ELL student in American Studies. Although this is Usiel’s first year in the USA, he has shown great commitment in learning not only the language but also the content of his subject. He is a very respectful student who does not forget to say “Hi Ms. Horvath” on a daily basis in Teams. He has also shown great progress academically making sure all his online assignments are done and turned in on time. This student also shows concern with his classmates by offering his services to translate for me when needed. Indeed this student is such a pleasure to have in class. He is one of those who make my job as a teacher easier.” Great job Usiel!
Shelsea Diaz
Shelsea is a Senior. Ms. Elms chose this student and said, “Shelsea is an excellent student, she works hard in piano class. She is always in a good mood, helping to keep class “up” to be successful. She is funny, supportive of her classmates and me. This is her third year with me, and I love having her in my classes.” Nice job Shelsea!
Roger Dominguez Velasquez
Roger is a Sophomore. Mr. Deahl had this to say. “Roger has made so much improvement since the beginning of the school year. He is closely reading our articles of the week and his written responses are always thoughtful. He has moved into proficiency for some of our learning targets and it is clear that Roger takes his learning seriously. What most impresses me about Roger, through, is his honesty. I always appreciate his feedback on our class surveys because he is honest with his own progress, make great suggestions for how I can improve our class and makes me laugh!” Congrats Roger.
Bryant Garcia
Bryant is a Senior. Ms. Hinz nominated Bryant and has this to say, “I am nominating Bryant because of the maturity and growth he has shown. He had a slow start Quarter 1 and many obstacles and challenges to overcome but, by working diligently and having a success mindset, he was able to pass all of his classes. He participates actively in all of his online classes and he is a lot of fun to talk to. He has a great personality and sense of humor that makes us all smile! Awesome job Bryant!
Mabbely Garcia
Mabbely is a Sophomore. She was chosen by Mr. Singh and here is why, “Mabbely is a very respectful student, friendly and always helps other classmates, she actively participates in all class activities such as group discussions and projects. Mabbely is always on task, turns every assignment in on time and has a success mindset. I wish her all the best for her future goals.” Congratulations Mabbely!
Amore’ Kamichi Garrett Hawkins
Amore’ is a Junior. Mr. Luna Dunton choose this student for the following reasons, “Amore’ is a kind-hearted student who enjoys working with others in class. She is an active participant in classroom discussions and I always look forward to seeing her in my class. Amore’ is very committed to taking on any challenges that come her way and I am so proud of the students I’ve seen her become over the past several years.” Nice job Amore’
Julian Gomez-Mendoza
Julian is a Senior. Mr. Dunklee nominated Julian because he is always willing to help others, answers questions during virtual meetings, and gets his work done to a high level. He is one of the first to start sharing his screen/pictures of physics problems during breakout rooms and getting the groups to work together to discuss the answer. Fantastic work Julian!
Gabriel Miranda
Gabriel is a Senior. Mr. Lamos said this, “I am suggesting Gabriel because of his all around approach to being awesome in my class. Gabriel always has a positive attitude and is respectful and helpful in any way he can be. He tries even when he is struggling and is not afraid to ask for help. When he is able he is always willing to help a classmate. Failure is not an option for him, you can count on him to try and try again. He is never perfect but strives to be better than he was yesterday everyday. Most importantly, Gabriel allows himself to be himself, rarely influenced by others, and bringing his own brand of awesome to Maryvale. In my mind he is a star!” Nice job Gabriel!
Judy Montes
Judy is a Sophomore and Ms. Gamboa chose her and had this to say – “Despite being in the hospital Judy has stayed on top of her work and never has to be asked to be on task nor does she have to be reminded of what is expected of her. She is an exceptional student!” Nice job Judy!
Rafael Morales Alfaro
Rafael is a Senior selected by Mr. Knapp. He said “Rafael has gone above and beyond in his art class while juggling home responsibilities in this time of pandemic. He will be displaying his Art Mask Project at Art One Gallery in Old Town Scottsdale along side his peers.” Great job Rafael!
Jose Rendon
Jose is a Sophomore chosen by Mr. Calvin because “Jose is a geometry student of mine that comes to class everyday and tries his hardest. In fact, he offers his solutions to help the rest of the class and can explain his thought process. Every day he is willing to work on his English during class and he is patient with my lack of Spanish abilities. I appreciate his hard work in math and his consistency towards learning a new language. This student is bound for great things in his life and I am just lucky to have a little part in it.” Nice job Jose!
Lizbet Reteria Borja
Lizbet is a Freshman and was chosen by Mr. Goldstein who said, “Lizbet practiced academic excellence by having the top score in the course, demonstrated diligent work by completing all of her assignments, and is well on the path to success.” Nice job Lizbet!
Cindy Rodriguez
Cindy is a Freshman and was chosen by Ms. Duarte. She said, “Cindy is my student of the month because she is a very respectful and dedicated young women. She makes sure she catches up if she misses school. She works hard on all her assignments as well as askes questions along the way if she does not understand. One of the attributes I value the most about Cindy is how she communicates with her teachers. Cindy is respectful to her peers and teachers, she works diligently every day and I am honored to teach such a hard working and dedicated young woman.” Terrific job Cindy!
Evangeline Sanchez
Evangeline is a freshman. Ms. Flickinger chose this student and said, “Evangeline is an exemplary student! She approaches each lesson with genuine enthusiasm. I can count on her to volunteer to read and share her thoughtful answers. The consistent effort and joy that Evangeline brings to our class is motivating and so appreciated! She takes feedback and works diligently to improve her writing, which is both thorough and deep.” Super job Evangeline!
Samantha Vasquez Torres
Samantha is a Senior. Whn Ms. Corona chose her she said, “Samantha is well-mannered and a super polite young lady who engages well with others. I am so happy to have Samantha in my Spanish class.” Congratulations Samantha!
